Shift4 Becomes First US-Based Hosted Gateway Certified for Canadian EMV (Chip and Pin)

LAS VEGAS (Marketwire) Friday, November 19, 2010 – While Canadian merchants and processors scramble to prepare for the March 31, 2011, conversion deadline for EMV (Chip and PIN) debit, Shift4 Corporation’s Canadian customers are breathing a sigh of relief because most of the work is already done for them.

On September 16, 2010, Shift4 became the first US-based, hosted payment gateway certified by Chase PaymentechTM for Retail EMV (Chip and PIN) payments in Canada.

“This is the first step in a broad support of Canadian Chip and PIN, which we will be rolling out over the coming months,” said Shift4 CEO Dave Oder.

Additional certifications from Paymentech are expected shortly for the Food & Beverage and Lodging markets, as well as a certification from Global Payments that will cover all verticals.

Shift4’s developers have made it possible for any retail client who has a POS system integrated with Shift4 since June 2009 to be EMV-certified with no additional coding.

“For retailers, all they need to do is plug in the supported Ingenico i3070 device and they’re good to go,” Oder said, noting that those who certified before June 2009 will need only to make two minor code changes in order to be EMV-ready.

“At its heart, Shift4 is a merchant advocate,” Oder said. “We can’t tell you how pleased we are to be able to alleviate this burden for our Canadian customers and partners.”
