LAS VEGAS — Tuesday, June 26, 2012 — Shift4 Corporation, the world’s largest independent payment gateway, has announced a new Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE) functionality achieved through a partnership with device manufacturer ID TECH.
“This solution pairs the proven security of TrueTokenization® with the PCI-reduction of P2PE and provides merchants with the best of both worlds,” said Shift4 CEO Dave Oder. “We’re very excited to have ID TECH as our partner on this project.”
ID TECH’s suite of devices allows merchants to encrypt cardholder data (CHD) at the point of entry – inside the swipe device or the keypad, before it has even entered the merchant’s environment. That encrypted data is then intercepted by Shift4’s 4Go® software-based, card-data firewall, and immediately sent to their DOLLARS ON THE NET® payment gateway. After authorizing the transaction, Shift4 passes back a TrueToken® to the merchant for record-keeping, card-on-file transactions, and chargeback defense. Because neither the encrypted data nor the TrueToken are considered CHD, the merchant’s system remains out of the scope of PCI audits.

For Shift4 customers who already have 4Go in place, the addition of P2PE is as simple as ordering the appropriate ID TECH devices and plugging them in. The development work has been completed by Shift4 and ID TECH, so merchants can reap the benefits of those efforts immediately.
“With this solution in place, the merchant has no card data environment (CDE) because no real card data ever touches their system. With no CDE, PCI has no claim on them,” Oder said. “They are free to turn the time and resources previously dedicated to compliance to issues of real importance, like true security and providing excellent service to their customers.”
