LAS VEGAS (Marketwired) Wednesday, June 19, 2013 – Shift4 Corporation, the world’s largest independent payment gateway, today issued an open letter to merchants and payments industry players highlighting Shift4’s ability to drastically reduce the time and costs involved in developing and certifying EMV-ready solutions for the U.S. market.
“EMV, Chip and PIN, Smart Card – no matter what you call it, there’s no sugar-coating the fact that bringing this technology to the U.S. is going to be an expensive and convoluted process,” said Shift4 Senior Vice President of R&D/CTO J.D. Oder. “It was difficult to implement in Europe, and even more so in Canada, but the variety of infrastructure and sheer number of banks and processors in the U.S. will make it exponentially more difficult here.”
Fortunately, it’s not all bad news.
According to the open letter, “Shift4 has the capability to be a force multiplier for point-of-sale (POS) and property management system (PMS) developers, terminal device manufacturers, and processors in their quest for U.S. EMV certifications. We can also drastically simplify the process for merchants looking to implement new solutions or needing to change devices or processors to be EMV-ready.”
The letter highlights a number of issues that merchants, POS/PMS vendors, terminal device manufacturers, processors, and even the card brands will face during the transition, and lays out Shift4’s unique position to assist each of them with the implementation of U.S. EMV.
