Shift4’s Secure Drivers Included on Visa’s List of Validated Payment Applications

Las Vegas, Nevada – June 29, 2006 – Shift4 Corporation, a leading developer of enterprise payment solutions, has recently been added to Visa’s List of Validated Payment Applications for the custom payment drivers it developed to secure leading third party point-of-sale (POS) systems. These simple to install drivers enable legacy POS systems to conform to the Payment Application Best Practices (PABP) defined by Visa.

“As a software company, we understand the desire for POS software providers to concentrate development efforts on new versions and solutions, as opposed to upgrades to their legacy applications. However, with 70% of data compromises caused by third party failures, mostly from point-of-sale applications, and the real business constraints that preclude some merchants from being able to upgrade all their systems, we felt an interim solution was required,” stated J. David Oder, President & CEO, Shift4.

Shift4’s solution for securing legacy applications was to create its own payment drivers for these systems that combine Shift4’s Tokenization technology, which replaces the credit card number with a randomly generated unique ID, and data truncation. Tokenization eliminates the need to store credit card data anywhere in the system, enabling the systems to comply with the PABP requirements, while still allowing merchants to leverage all of the system’s payment tools and functionality, including full reporting, incremental authorizations, credits and recurring billing.

“Our goal was to create a solution that could quickly, easily and cost effectively work with some of our merchants’ most critical POS software while enabling them to keep current operations the same,” stated J.D. Oder II, CTO, Shift4. “Plus, we designed these drivers to not only pass their own PABP validation, but to greatly improve a customer’s ability to maintain compliance with Visa and MasterCard’s mandatory merchant security program, the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard.”

The secure drivers currently included on Visa’s List of Validated Payment Applications represent Shift4’s first foray into creating PABP compliant versions of third party payment applications. Over the next several months, Shift4 plans to release additional drivers for various systems and versions.
